Gas Mark to Air Fryer

Older recipes and some packets only give a gas mark. Pick it from the list and you'll get an air fryer temperature and time to start from.

The °C and °F columns are the standard UK gas mark table. The air fryer columns use the same rule as the converter.

How I convert a gas mark

A gas mark is a setting, not a temperature, so it goes through two steps. First it becomes the conventional oven temperature from the standard table, so gas mark 6 is 200°C. A conventional oven runs about 20°C hotter than a fan oven for the same food, so the converter takes 20°C off for that, then the usual rule takes over: another 20°C off the temperature and 20% off the time.

Gas mark 6 for 30 minutes becomes 160°C for 24 minutes.

Very low gas marks

Gas marks 1/4 and 1/2 are very low, the kind of heat used for drying meringues or keeping things warm. Plenty of air fryers don't go that low, so check the lowest setting on yours before relying on the result.
