Oven to Air Fryer Converter

Most frozen food only comes with oven instructions. Type them in here and you'll get an air fryer temperature and time to start from. Choose the oven type the instructions are for. Fan is the default, so use the fan oven temperature.

How the conversion works

Take 20°C (36°F) off the fan (convection) oven temperature, then take 20% off the time. That is the whole rule.

200°C fan for 30 minutes becomes 180°C for 24 minutes.

Packets print conventional and gas mark temperatures about 20°C higher than fan, so for those the converter takes another 20°C (36°F) off first. Gas marks are turned into a conventional temperature using the standard UK table. Whichever number on the packet you use, you get the same air fryer setting.

I built Oven to Air because I was tired of scrolling through long articles just to convert an oven time for the air fryer. When I'm cooking, I want the answer, not an essay. So this does one thing: it turns oven instructions into an air fryer time and temperature, quickly. I hope you find it useful.

Things the numbers can't tell you

  • Air fryers aren't all the same. Basket size, wattage and fan strength all change how fast things cook. Treat the first go as a trial and write down what worked.
  • Check early. Look a couple of minutes before the converted time. You can always add time, you can't take it back.
  • One layer beats a heap. Food piled up in the basket cooks unevenly. Cook in two batches if you have to.
  • Shake or turn smaller pieces part way through so they brown on all sides.
  • Food sitting in liquid, like stews, casseroles and saucy bakes, is a poor fit for the rule. The fast air can splash it about and it won't simmer properly, so cook it in the oven or on the hob instead.

Questions

What is the rule you use?

Take 20°C (36°F) off the oven temperature and 20% off the time. A fan oven at 200°C for 30 minutes becomes 180°C for 24 minutes in the air fryer.

Does it matter if my oven is fan, conventional or gas?

Yes. Packets usually print a fan oven temperature and a conventional one, and the conventional one is about 20°C higher. Pick your oven type in the converter and use the matching number from the packet. For conventional ovens and gas marks, the converter takes that extra 20°C (36°F) off for you, so you get the same air fryer setting whichever number you start from.

Why does the result say to check early?

Air fryers differ in power, basket size and how hard the fan blows. The converted time is where I would start looking, not a promise. Checking a couple of minutes early costs you nothing.

Does the converter replace a food thermometer?

No. It gives you settings to start from. Use a food thermometer to confirm the food has reached the safe temperature, especially for chicken, sausages and anything minced.

Can I go the other way, from air fryer to oven?

Yes, on the air fryer to oven page. It adds the 20°C back and lengthens the time to match.
